James (Jim) Donald Thompson of Burlington, NC passed away Friday, November 11, 2022. Jim was born January 6, 1946, to the late James Edwin Thompson and the late Lenice Greenway Thompson of Elberton, GA, and was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Amelia Stebie Wells Thompson and his grand dogs Noel, Pokey, Tripp, Bully, Hershey, & Sandy. Jim is survived by his brother, Steve Thompson (Beverly) of Bennetsville, SC, children, Edwin Thompson of Conway, SC, Beth Thompson Dudkowski (Michael) of Charlotte, NC, his grandchildren Bailey Pethel of Mt Pleasant, NC, Brianna Pethel and boyfriend, Ashton, of Conway, SC, Bella Pethel of Charlotte, NC, and Everett Dudkowski of Charlotte, NC, great-granddaughter, Addison of Mt Pleasant, NC, niece Stephanie Duke (Shane) of Woodruff, SC, great-nephew, Pierce of Woodruff, SC and many cousins that were very special to him. Jim was also very fond of his grand dogs Buddy, Cocoa, Noel and Scarlett.
Jim graduated from Laurens High School in 1964 with college aspirations. Jim then attended Montreat – Anderson College where he met the love of his life, Stebie, while earning his Associates of Science degree in 1969. He then obtained his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Erskine College in 1971. At the height of the Vietnam War and Draft, James joined the SC Army National Guard where he was stationed at Fort Jackson, SC throughout the remainder of the war.
James used his business degree to become a computer programmer, working for several financial institutions in Greenville, SC, and Charlotte, NC throughout his 40-year career. Jim cherished his family greatly and always went above and beyond to show them how much he loved each one of them. He prided himself as the breakfast cook of the family and always made sure his wife, children, and grand children ate breakfast every day.
A memorial service to honor James will be held Sunday, December 18th at 1:00pm at Rocky River Presbyterian Church, 7940 Rocky River Rd, Concord, NC 28025 with visitation to follow. A graveside internment service will be held during the springtime at Rockfish Presbyterian Church in Wallace, NC.
James’ family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff members of A Better Solution in Home Care, Amedisys Hospice Care, and Seasons at Southpoint Memory Care Center for the compassionate care they provided James during the last few months of his life.
