Harry Jones, a beloved husband, father, grandfather (known as Poppie), and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 83 on October 26th, 2023 with his closest family by his side. He was a remarkable man, cherished by all who knew him.
Harry's life was a testament to love, family, and the joy of simple pleasures. He grew up in Monticello, a place that held a special spot in his heart, shaping the values and character that would define his life.
In his early years, he met the love of his life, Linda, in 8th grade, though he often said that he noticed her even before that. Their connection was a true love story, and from those young beginnings, they built a bond that would last a lifetime.
His daughters were his pride and joy. They had many cherished traditions, including going to the movies, creating precious memories. Additionally, many Saturday mornings were marked by a special routine when he would take his daughters for a treat at McDonald’s while Linda was at work. These moments of quality time together were filled with love and laughter.
For many years, Harry would take the family on an annual trip to Florida with ‘Other Mama’ and ‘PawPaw’ (Linda’s parents), creating countless treasured memories. They also spent many Sunday afternoons at his brother's and mother's house, where their shared love for each other was obvious. These gatherings often featured homemade ice cream, a sweet reminder of the simple joys that bound their hearts.
Harry's family would spend many summer days heading to the lake, where they'd water ski, share picnics, and enjoy cookouts. These moments epitomized the happiness he found in family, good food, and the outdoors.
One of his greatest passions was playing cards, a tradition he shared with both family and friends. The laughter, camaraderie, and (mostly) friendly competition around the card table were the perfect reflection of Harry's warm nature (and strong desire to win).
But perhaps one of his most treasured pastimes was visiting Ocean Lakes Campground in Myrtle Beach with his family. This special place became a haven for creating unforgettable memories and strengthening the bonds of love within the family.
During his working years, Harry dedicated 45 years to Lorillard, a testament to his dedication, loyalty, and work ethic. Upon retirement, he and Linda embarked on incredible adventures, traveling to all 50 states and exploring various corners of the world. However, it was the moments spent with family that truly filled his heart with joy.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, John G. and Dorothy R. Jones, a brother, two sisters, and two great-grandchildren, whom he undoubtedly welcomed with open arms in Heaven.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, who was not only his life partner but also his best friend. She cared for him with unwavering devotion, especially during the last 10 years as he battled some health issues. Their bond was an inspiration to all who witnessed it, a testament to the enduring power of love.
Harry is also survived by his two daughters, Cindy and Woody Jones of Weaverville, NC and Angie and Art Kratkiewicz,of Houston, TX, as well as his brother, Joe Jones of Winston-Salem, NC. His legacy continues through his eight grandchildren and nine (plus one on the way) great-grandchildren who brought so much joy to his life. Christian and Amanda Anderson and children, Tanner, Teagan and Claire of Houston, TX, Austin and Hannah Anderson of Neptune, NJ, Avery and Lauren Anderson and son, Kai of Longview, TX., Logan and Rylee Anderson and baby due in February of Portland, OR, Matthew and Maxelise Jones and children, Brooks, Sawyer and Rye of San Francisco, CA, Robert and Erin Jones and children, Cal and Maddux of Weaverville, NC, Nick Kratkiewicz of Austin, TX and Katie Kratkiewicz of Houston, TX.
While his family will miss him greatly, they have peace knowing Harry is now with Jesus in heaven. His legacy lives on in the stories and memories of the lives he touched. Harry's love for family, his genuine kindness, and spirit will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
