After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, Glenn Ray (Pops) Cardwell, 76, passed away on July 24, 2015 at Moses Cone Hospital. He will be remembered as a loving husband, caring father, playful grandfather, and devoted brother. Glenn was born in Madison on August 18, 1938 to the late Dorothy (Dot) Mae and Emory (Slim) Cardwell. He is also preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Leigh Cardwell; brother, Bill Cardwell; sisters, Estelle Strader and Virginia Anderson; and step-son, Curtis Marsh.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, July 28 at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield chapel with Reverend Keith Letterman officiating. Interment will be in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 AM prior to the service.
Glenn retired from Breece Enterprises after more than twenty years of service. His family will remember his legacy of working hard and playing hard. His large family was the true joy in his life and he cherished the time they spent together. Glenn enjoyed family parties, with country or bluegrass music on the radio and grilling great food. He believed laughter was the best medicine and was never fully dressed without a smile. He had a great sense of humor and was a fun loving, hands-on Dad and PawPaw. A true outdoorsman and a proud card carrying active member of the NRA, Glenn loved to hunt and fish. He kept a bountiful garden and earned a little “walkin’ around” money by chopping and selling wood. This tough on the outside hardworking family man had a soft spot for animals and loved his feline buddy “Snowball” and dog, “Lady”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Janice Hammer Marsh Cardwell; son, Michael (Nancy) Cardwell of Lumberton; daughters, Anita (companion, Lisa Luck) of Randleman and Kimberly Brown (friend, Milton Murphy) of Pleasant Garden; son, Terry (Kimlah) Cardwell of Kernersville; brother, Thomas (Shirley) Cardwell of Stoneville; sisters, Ann (Larry) Tate of Reidsville, Kay Chatman of Eden and Becky Hutchens of Whitsett; step sons, Michael (Carol) Marsh of Wilmington and Rick Marsh of Climax; sons-in-law, David Brown and Freddie Blackmon both of Randolph County; 17 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and very special friend, Marc Oxenreider.
