Dr. Curtis Ray Holmes, Sr., lovingly known as Ray, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on May 28, 1928, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to Archie and Sallie Holmes, Ray lived a life defined by service, dedication, and love.
After graduating from high school, Ray proudly joined the United States Air Force, exemplifying a steadfast commitment to his country despite the challenge of hearing in only one ear.
Following his military service, Ray utilized the GI bill to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, where he earned accolades in the field of chemistry, a testament to his intellect and determination. Ray’s pursuit of excellence and service led him to the Baltimore School of Dentistry, where he earned a degree in dental surgery. His career was marked by compassion and a commitment to improving the lives of others, values that remained central to his life. Ray’s dentistry career is marked by smiles all over Greensboro, not only for healthy teeth, but for the friendships he made with his patients.
On April 30, 1950, Ray married his high school sweetheart, Clara Byrd Holmes. Their marriage of 71 years was a testament to their enduring love and devotion. Ray shared many moments of love and laughter with the Byrd family through the years. Clara, the love of his life, preceded him in death, leaving behind cherished memories of their beautiful life together.
Ray found joy in life’s simple pleasures. An avid golfer, he proudly achieved three holes-in-one. He also delighted in his time on his farm, tending to his cattle, enjoying the company of his beloved donkeys, and riding his tractor.
Above all, Ray was a generous, loving man who found his greatest joy being surrounded by his family. He is survived by his two sons, Curt (Dorothy) Holmes and Brad (Hannah) Holmes; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Tyler) McHone, Curtis (Gaby) Holmes, Alexander Holmes, and Brayden Hahn; and one great-grandchild, Tyson McHone. Ray’s family was his greatest source of pride, and he will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
In addition to his wife, Clara, Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Sallie Holmes and his brothers, Fred, Ralph and Jerry Holmes.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, December 26 at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel. A service to celebrate Dr. Holmes' life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 27 in the Lineberry Center at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel followed by a gathering with a reception at the funeral home.
