Dorothy Virginia Burton Evans, 87, passed into eternal life on December 13, 2017. Born in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Lemmie L. Burton and Fannie H. Burton, Dot was a generous and caring soul to her family, countless friends, and colleagues worldwide.
She was a 1947 graduate of Greensboro High School, after which she worked for Pilot Life Insurance Company before marrying and raising a family – the latter her life’s greatest joy. Dot worked for the Greensboro City Schools until the mid-1970s before joining the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. where assignments took her to a dozen foreign countries and cities such as Rome, Paris, Beijing, and Moscow. Having served as an assistant to three U.S. ambassadors, her assignments often coincided with major world events such as George H.W. Bush’s trip to China in 1989, the overthrow of President Nicolae Ceausescu in Romania the same year, and the independence of Belarus from the Soviet Union in 1993. Dot retired from the Department of State in 1995 after more than 20 years of service.
A member of Guilford College United Methodist Church, she is survived by daughter Donna Evans Apple (William) of Todd, North Carolina, son Jeffrey M. Evans of Alexandria, Virginia, sister Lemzie Burton Clemmons of Greensboro, grand-daughter Courtney Ward Keeton (Hunter) and great grand-daughter Kinley Keeton of Gibsonville, North Carolina.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, North Carolina 27407. The family wishes to offer its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Clapp’s Nursing Center who cared for Dot. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Clapp’s Nursing Center, Inc., 5229 Appomattox Rd., Pleasant Garden, North Carolina 27313.
