Donald Dewey Smith

Donald Dewey Smith was born on March 31, 1934, in Orlando, Florida and died January 26, 2018 in Greensboro, North Carolina after a short illness at Moses Cone Hospital. A private family interment will take place at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro at a later date.

After attending Orlando schools, he attended Duke University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1956 and his medical degree in 1960. He married Jane Marshall Putnam, a Charlotte, NC native, on June 18, 1960.

After his internship at the University of Florida Hospital, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Navy Medical Corps. Released from the Navy in 1964, he returned to Duke University for his residency. He served as chief resident in pediatrics in his third year. Upon completion of his training, he moved to Greensboro, where he joined the practice of Samuel Ravenel, Edward P. Benbow, and Jean McAllister. He practiced with them for twenty years, before being recruited to direct the Greensboro Area Health Education Center (AHEC). In this role, he was instrumental in developing the teaching service at the Moses Cone Hospital as well as continuing medical education for the region. In his retirement, he enjoyed cooking, reading, and listening to music, particularly opera. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the Greensboro Medical Society.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Putnam Smith, sons, Christopher Donald Smith of Greensboro and Timothy William Smith, daughter-in-law Miriam Ruth Jorgensen, granddaughters, Olivia Jane Wellner Smith and Katherine Emma Martin Smith all of St. Louis, MO, and his cherished dog and companion Giacomo Puccini Smith.
