Charles was born on October 1, 1923 in Boiling Springs, NC, the son of Clarence and Sally Ballinger Barton. He moved to Greensboro with his family and attended Bessemer School. During WWII, he served in the US Air Force as a waist gunner on a B-17 as was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He flew on 32 missions. Following his military service, he went to work with Texaco and retired after 32 years of service. He then went to work for a short period with Bain Oil Company. He was a former member of Bessemer Baptist Church. Charles was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Waldo Barton and two sisters, Lila Barton and Beatrice Barton Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 65 years, Patricia Poag Barton; sons, Charles Barton and wife Bobbie and Michael Barton and wife Crystal, all of Kernersville, NC. Six grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, 2:00 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with burial to follow with full military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel.
