Betty was a graduate of Asheboro High School, earned a bachelors degree in business from East Carolina University and a masters degree from UNC-Charlotte. In high school and college she excelled in math, science and business. At East Carolina she was active in student government, women's honor council, and Chi Omega sorority. She had a successful multifaceted career as a teacher in schools in Charlotte and Winston-Salem and in sales for food companies.
In 1980 Betty moved to San Francisco after RJ Reynolds acquired Del Monte Foods. Betty joined Del Monte sales where she excelled and rose through the ranks. In 1988 she was named Del Monte's national district sales manager of the year. Later she was put in charge of sales for the western USA. In 1993 she accepted a job as Director of Marketing for Rogers American, food brokers in Charlotte, so she could once again be close to her family and her many NC friends. While in Charlotte she built and furnished her own beautiful home, an achievement of which she was particularly proud.
In 1997 mutual friends introduced her to Joe Brantley who became her second husband on August 22, 1998, the beginning of the happiest years of her life. She retired soon thereafter to enjoy the ensuing years with Joe, with her Brantley, Caviness and Auman families, and with the legion of friends they both enjoyed.
In Greensboro Betty was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a "First Friends" volunteer for many years. She was also a member of the Wednesday Lecture Club, the Greensboro Garden Club, the Greensboro Cotillion, the Greensboro Women's Invitational Golf Association, and past president of the Greensboro Country Club Women’s Golf Association In addition she was a past member of the board of directors of the Greensboro Opera Company.
Seven years ago Betty was diagnosed with myelofibrosis but she did not let that interfere with an active life of travel, entertaining, golf, attending Carolina Panthers games and enjoying her family and friends. In these final days her room, both in the hospital and at home, has been filled with family and friends with whom she has cherished these last times together. Telephone calls and emails have arrived from many distant points and have proved a comfort to Betty and often provoked a story from her about good times spent With the sender.
She will be missed greatly but we live in the afterglow of her love and a life well-lived. All of us felt the many prayers and loving thoughts that were raised for her. For all these things we are eternally thankful.
A celebration of her life will be Saturday, 11:00 AM, January 25, 2014 in the Mullin Life Center at First Presbyterian Church and the family will visit with friends following the service.
