Bennie Lee Craig Inman

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 pm on Monday evening, April 2, 2018, at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm St. Chapel in Greensboro.

Mrs. Inman was born in South Carolina and moved to Greensboro as a freshman to what was then Women’s College (now UNCG) where she received an A.B. degree in Sociology and Psychology and later a M.ED. degree in Educational Administration. She also attended the University of Minnesota and UNCCH for graduate work in Child Welfare and Psychology.

She was a charter member of the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Association and in 1955 she became Executive Director of the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy and Orthopedic School (now Gateway Education Center). Mrs. Inman served as Executive Director/Principal of this agency until her retirement in 1983.

As a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, Mrs. Inman served as a Deacon and for several terms as an Elder in addition to chairmanships of a number of committees on the Session, including three years as chairman of the Pastoral Care Division. Also, she held offices in the Presbyterian Women, in church circles and the Church School.

In the community, Mrs. Inman was very active in the Junior League, serving as President, Vice-President and chairman of various committees. She was awarded the Service Cup given annually to one outstanding member and was twice named to the Roll of Honor. From the Greensboro league, she was nominated and elected to be Director of Region XIII of the Association of Junior Leagues, where she served a two year term.

In 1961 she was selected as Greensboro’s Woman of the Year by the Quota Club. In 1975 she was chosen as a recipient of an Alumni Service Award by UNCG and in 1983 received the Calvin H. Wiley Award for Excellence in Education from the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to the Junior League, Mrs. Inman was a former member of the Altrusa Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, and served on the boards of the Presbyterian Counseling Center, Friendship Day, Child Care Ministry, Sue Lynn Residential Services, and Industrial Services of Guilford, among others.

Mrs. Inman was most active in the establishment and operation of Bell House, a residence for persons with physical disabilities, where she served first as a consultant, then as vice-president, president, and member of its Board of Directors as well as that of the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy Association. She was honored along with Meredith Leigh Haynes by having the Haynes-Inman School for disabled children in Jamestown named after them. She also enjoyed fly fishing and watching her Tar Heels!

In 1939 Mrs. Inman was married to A. M. “Jeff” Inman who died in 1968. She is survived by their son, Jeffrey Craig Inman and his wife Elaine of Greensboro; grandsons, Jeffrey Craig Inman, Jr. and his wife Carolyn of Mt. Juliet, TN, Alan Carpenter of Summerfield, and Andre Dumont and his wife Liz of Greensboro; granddaughters, Audra Lee Inman of Spring City, TN, Kelley Carpenter Michie of Charlotte, and Nicole Stephens of Henderson, Nevada; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
