Born on November 4, 1937 in North Hampton County, NC she was the daughter of the late Jimmie Grant Collins and the late Hattie Deloatch Collins. After a long career, she retired from P. Lorrilard Company where she had many colleagues and friends. Irene was an avid sports fan. She was a competitive bowler and rarely missed football, golf and tennis on TV. Irene was a longtime and faithful member of Providence Baptist Church where she was an usher since 1970. She loved her family and was the glue and matriarch that held everyone together. Her kind heart and loving spirit made it possible to help the younger generation’s transition from teenagers to young adults with ease. Annie also enjoyed doing yard work.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Hattie Fewell, Nannie Gwynn, Carneige Collins, and Jimmie Collins.
Irene is survived by her two sons, Michael Wayne Hammond of Hawaii and Haywood Lewis Hammond, Jr. of Greensboro; eight grandchildren, Haywood Lewis Hammond, III and wife Ashley, Prentice LaMount Hammond and wife Shameka, Tevin Jerry Hammond, Amson and wife Amanda, Jabari, Adjatou, Umme, Aliah “Le-Le”; twelve great grandchildren, Jordan Blake Hammond, Jazmyn Kennedy Hammond, Erin, Hope, Joshua, Amslia, Tevin Jr., Prentice Jr., Jace, Amari, Major, and Brielle; sister, Thelma Collins Fewell; brother-in-law, Bobby Fewell; sister-in-law, Doris Faye Collins; one uncle, Walter Deloatch, Sr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
A celebration of life service for Irene will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at Providence Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church starting at 1:30. She will be buried at Carolina Biblical Gardens of Guilford on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 2 pm.
