Amanda Marie Patty passed away peacefully on October 18 in Birmingham, AL. Born on August 2, 1978, Amanda was an attorney, accountant, and, most importantly, a principled, fair, loyal, and loving person. Born and raised in Greensboro, Amanda returned home after finishing her education and simultaneously dedicated herself to both her career and the community. She gave time and support to many causes, including Guilford Go Red for Women, the Women’s Professional Forum, the Children’s Home Society of NC, ArtsGreensboro, and her church, Christ United Methodist.
Amanda loved dancing, travel, crab legs, and all things lemon. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and that was a very good thing, because it was a big, beautiful heart. She was passionate about fighting injustice and inequality. She valued rational analysis over gut instincts. She knew who she was and what she believed---and she was willing to share these beliefs with anyone who would listen. In even the toughest of times, a stuffed animal would always make her smile and, without fail, illuminate even the darkest of rooms.
Amanda had many accomplishments during her time with us, including adding eight letters to her name (JD, CPA, CVA), visiting all 50 states (and doing so more quickly than her brother John), traveling around Europe multiple times (both alone and with her fiancée Scott), learning how to make the perfect scrambled eggs, and being honored as a member of the Triad Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” this year. She was proud of having lived for two years, with her brother John, on the South Side of Pittsburgh, and he feels blessed to have those memories.
Amanda is survived by her fiancée, Scott Essick; her parents, Seldon and Dee Patty, all of Greensboro; her brother, John; sister-in-law Maggie; and niece, Hazel, all of Chicago; her grandmother, Sybil Patty and uncle, Tommy Patty, both of Hendersonville, NC; her uncle and aunt, Jimmy and Cynthia Bruton of Greer, SC; her uncle, William Darden of Faro, NC; and several loving and much-loved cousins. She is now meeting her older brother, James; grandfather, Daniel Patty; and once again with her grandparents, Charles and Hazel Wiggs; her aunt, Patricia Darden; and her best friend, Amanda White.
Amanda’s family are thankful for the special care that she received from Dr. Dan Bensimhon. Dr. Paula Ross, both of Greensboro, Dr. Edward D. Colvin, Dr. Mark Law, and their colleagues at the Alabama Congenital Heart Disease Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 22, at 3 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 410 N Holden Rd, Greensboro, NC. The family will visit with friends following the service in the church.
In lieu of flowers, Amanda’s family asks that memorial donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.
