Joseph E. McQuade, 93, who previously resided in the Camp Creek Community with his wife, Joan, passed away Thursday afternoon, December 26, 2013 after a brief illness, at John M. Reed Health and Rehab in Limestone.
He was born in Watervliet, New York and made his living as a heavy machinery mechanic.
Mr. McQuade was a World War II Navy combat veteran, Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class, and survived the sinking of the aircraft carrier Gambier Bay during the battle of Leyte Gulf on October 25, 1944 in the Philippines. He was also involved in the assaults of Saipan and Tinian, and the battle for the Mariana Islands, known as the “Great Marianas Turkey Shoot”. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his children and their spouses: JoAnn Smith and husband David of Afton, Ronald McQuade and wife Paulette of Elizabethton, Richard McQuade and wife Vickie of Mosheim, Joseph McQuade Jr. and wife Janet of Amsterdam, New York, and Mary Herrington and husband Harold of Greeneville; grandchildren and their spouses: Timothy Smith and wife Theresa, Lori Higgins, Heather Wood, Brandon McQuade, Darcy McQuade, Joseph McQuade III and wife Vickie, Jennifer McQuade, Rodney Herrington and wife Kelly, Norman Herrington and Kelly, William Herrington and wife Kristen; great grandchildren: Daniel Smith, Sarah Smith, Danyelle Higgins, Brye Higgins, Michelle Hall and husband Josh, Jacob Wood, Garrett Wood, Viviana McQuade, Jewelian McQuade, Claire McQuade, Alisa Herrington, Joshua Herrington, Christopher Herrington, Tyler Herrington, and Matthew Herrington; and a great-great grandchild: Aubrey Hall.
He was the son of the late Michael Bertrand and Mary McQuade and was preceded in death by one sister: Marie Chofflet; a brother: Bertrand McQuade; his wife of 70 years: Joan McQuade; two sons: William McQuade and Michael McQuade; and a grandson: Christopher McQuade.
The family will receive friends 2-4pm Sunday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be conducted at 12:30pm Monday, December 30, 2013, in Kiser-Rose Hill Chapel with Father Jim Harvey officiating.
Interment will follow in Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. The Greene County Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy Military Honors Team will conduct a military graveside service.
