He was a truck driver and a carpenter. He was of the Christian faith and a member of the Eagles Club of Jeffersonville, Indiana.
James is survived by his wife of Gayle Garrett; daughter, Tara Garrett of Chattanooga, daughter and son-in-law, Charli Blevins (Donnie,Jr.) of Marysville, Indiana; granddaughter, Shelby and Philippe LeMaitre of Chattanooga; granddaughter, Jessalynn Blevins of Marysville, Indiana ; grandson, Dalton Blevins of Marysville, Indiana; grandson Dillon Blevins of Marysville, Indiana; great grandson, Lucas LeMaitre of Chattanooga; brothers, Ken Lakes of Richmond, Kentucky, Chester Tooley of Florida, Norman Garrett of Cocoa, Florida and Kevin Garrett of Greeneville; former wife and friend, Brenda Tooley of Chattanooga; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by his father and mother, George Garrett and Thelma Lakes.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Pewee Valley Seventh Day Adventist Church (the church he helped build) on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 3pm. The address is 103 LaGrange Rd, Pewee Valley, Kentucky 40056.
