Since 2004, Deborah was a nurse practitioner working as a hospitalist. She had also served on the faculty of the College of Nursing, East Tennessee State University, and worked in a variety of clinical settings in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. She earned the Master of Science degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the PhD in Nursing with a focus on gerontology at The Medical College of Georgia.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Greeneville, Tennessee.
She had an avid interest in the arts, participating in community theater and choral groups.
Survivors include her mother: Barbara Poole of Woodleaf, North Carolina; father: Tom Poole of China Grove, North Carolina; sister: Kelley Stransky of Kissimmee, Florida; her children: Evan Small of Elon, North Carolina and Gillian Small of Evans, Georgia; her former husband: Jeff Small of Evans, Georgia; and her husband: David Hendricksen of Greeneville, Tennessee .
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Greeneville with Rev. Dan Donaldson officiating. The family will share a time for gathering with friends in the Simon Room at First Presbyterian Church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee or to First Presbyterian Church.
A private disposition of cremains will follow at a later date.
