Ann Barton Hinkle, age 74, of Crescent Street, Greeneville, left this world for the peace and wholeness of life with Christ on November 30, 2010. Her family says that she was a true Southern lady, gracious and gentle, and a loving wife and mother. She was a sincere Baptist and proud to be a member of First Baptist Church in Greeneville.
She was born May 17, 1936 in Boldo, Walker County, Alabama. In 1956, while Ann was working for the telephone company in Seattle, Washington, her older brother Elbert brought a shipmate home for pie on President’s Day, and on May 3, 1956, Ann married 3rd Class Petty Officer Charles Kenneth Hinkle of Midway, Tennessee.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years: Charles Kenneth Hinkle; daughters: Rhonda Hinkle Mitchell of Huntsville, Alabama and Kendra Hinkle of Greeneville; son: Dane Hinkle of Greeneville; three treasured grandchildren: Brad Caldwell of Opelika, Alabama, Emily Caldwell of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Sara Mitchell of Huntsville, Alabama; two brothers: Elbert Barton of Virginia and Robert Barton of Alabama; five sisters: Hazel Drummond, Mary Rich, Nita Richey Robinson, Kaye Bost, and Faye Freeman, all of Alabama; special friends: Mary Sue Brakebill, Dr. E.B. Smith, and Dr. Brad Strange
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Armstrong Barton and Mary Lena O’Rear Barton of Alabama; a sister: Dorothy Ethel Borden; and a brother: Thomas Dewy Barton.
She loved roses and camellias, fine dishware and clothing, vanilla ice cream, Republican politics, current events, and her job in text management with the Greeneville Sun. She enjoyed reading the letters to Reverend Billy Graham in the newspaper and listening to the sermons of Reverend James W. Best at First Baptist Church. She especially loved and often quoted his greeting each Sunday morning, “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad therein.”
Funeral services for Mrs. Hinkle will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, December 3, 2010 at Kiser-Rose Hill Chapel with interment following at Pine Grove Cemetery. The Rev. James Best and the Rev. Frank Broyles will officiate.
Carroll Hinkle, Coy Hinkle, Shannon Hinkle, Shawn Hinkle, Craig Fillers, Terry Webb, and David Crum will serve as pallbearers.
