Michael William Smith

Michael William Smith, 65, of Bainbridge passed away in an accident Friday.
Michael was born November 11, 1953 in Greencastle. He attended Greencastle schools until enlisting in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Mike returned home from the war and continued a life of service. Mike was a member of the Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Department for thirty years acting as chief for over a decade. Mike was also a Bainbridge town councilperson and was the council president for a term.
Mike was employed as a truck driver in the early eighties and then worked as a commercial HVAC installer for Vasey for 25+ years. Mike was also employed by DePauw University as a plant mechanical supervisor. Mike was looking forward to retiring at the end of this year to spend even more time with his family.
Michael married Pam November 20, 1981 in a small ceremony at Clinton Falls Community Church and his wife survives. They raised a daughter, Rachael (Shane) Thomas Greencastle, and a son, Shawn (Sarah) Smith Danville, all surviving. Michael’s greatest joy was his five grandchildren: Cauy, Erin, Trace, Claire, and Max. Mike and Pam spent their evenings and weekends traveling to truck pulls, wrestling matches, football and soccer games, swim meets, and dance recitals.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda Louise (Boswell) Davis, and two sisters. He is survived by his mother and father in law, Tom and Marcia Miller (Clinton Falls), brothers-in-law Gregory (Pam) Miller, Jeffrey (Abby) Miller, Douglas (Deborah) Miller, Daniel (Yvonne) Miller, several nieces and nephews, and brothers and sisters Paul L. Smith Jr., Cedrick F. Smith, Robert D. Smith, Cami S. Lady, Kathy L. Davis and Peggy S. Davis.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2018, at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Rev. Mindy Huffman officiating. Burial will follow in Clinton Falls Cemetery.
