Virginia Gore Shelton, 98, of Fort Collins, CO passed away January 11, 2018 at MacKenzie Place in Fort Collins. Virginia was born November 13, 1919, in Jefferson, Iowa to the late Phleete and Byrde (Judy) Gore. She was united in marriage to James H. Shelton on May 28, 1943, in Jefferson. He preceded her in death January 28, 1989.
She spent her early years in Jefferson and received her teaching degree from Iowa State Teachers College (currently University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school in Nevada, Iowa and Grand Junction, Iowa as well as working in the office of the Registrar at Iowa State College (currently Iowa State University) prior to her marriage.
After her husband graduated from law school at the University of Iowa, they moved their young family to Greeley in 1949, where they lived until Jim’s death. Virginia remained in Greeley until moving to Fort Collins in 2008. Virginia was active in various organizations including the American Association of University Women (AAUW), PEO Chapter CR and Greeley County Club. Virginia was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Greeley and served in many capacities during her nearly 65 years as a member of the church. She served on the Vestry, as president of Trinity Episcopal Churchwomen, as a Northern Deanery director, as a representative to the Diocesan Board of Episcopal Churchwoman, as president of Saint Anne’s Guild and as a member of the Altar Guild for more than 50 years.
Virginia enjoyed playing bridge with friends, reading, needlepoint, genealogy and traveled extensively.
She cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and extended family.
She is survived by her children, Judy Kinkade of Fort Collins, John (Marilyn) Shelton of Carlsbad, CA, and Mary (Kurt) Shafer of Omaha, NE.; Four loving grandchildren, Tyler (Shun) Kinkade, of Tokyo, Japan, Alyson Kinkade of Loveland, Jack (Cecilia) Shelton of Carlsbad, CA, and Dayna (Josh) Kinkade Campbell of Loveland; and three great-grandchildren, Jay Campbell, Linnea Shelton and Miles Shelton.
Virginia’s two brothers predeceased her in 2017.
The family wishes to thank all those who cared for her during her last years at MacKenzie Place and Halcyon Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 3, 2018, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3800 20th St., Greeley, with a reception to follow in the church’s fellowship hall.
