Robert “Bob” D. Bernd, 81, of Greeley, passed away at his home on January 1, 2021. Bob was born April 20, 1938 in Milliken, CO to Edward M. and Clara (Anderson) Bernd. Bob married Janie (Huston) Bernd on June 1, 1960.
Bob was raised in Gilcrest, CO, and La Salle, CO, graduating from College High School in Greeley in 1956. He continued his education at Colorado State College (UNC) and graduated in June of 1960. He had been in ROTC and entered the Air Force in September of 1960. His Air Force career was served in Texas.
Their first daughter, Wendy Bernd Shupe, was born in 1961 in Big Springs, TX. They moved back to Colorado in September of 1961 and their daughters Jill Bernd Myles and Amy Bernd Dunlap were both born in Greeley. As soon as Bob got out of the service they returned to Greeley where he worked for Gordon Rissler at Gordon’s Foodliner (he had also worked there in high school). He then began working at Johnson’s Market in La Salle.
He was always interested in radio and began working part-time for KYOU/KGRE in Greeley. This was the beginning of his radio career. He soon began doing the news and this included attending city council meetings, school board meetings, daily stops to the fire department, police department, state patrol, and sheriff’s department. It also evolved into him broadcasting many local high school sporting events. In time, the station changed ownership and he was lucky enough to get the chance to work with Joe Tennessen at KFKA.
After KFKA changed ownership, he was again lucky enough to be in customer service at New Frontier Bank. Following his time at New Frontier, he went to work at Colorado East Bank along with his friend and coworker, Terry Seelhoff. He remained there for approximately 10 years and retired from banking in July of 2019.
Bob filled his time driving cars for Toyota and Volkswagen, in addition to the morning news for Pirate Radio, and he always prerecorded the morning Saturday show, which was a favorite of his.
One of his greatest passions was his record and music collection. This began at a young age and was a lifetime of enjoyment for him. Another pride and joy of Bob’s were his red Corvette and red 1970 Impala. He enjoyed being a member of the local Corvette Club.
Bob was a lifetime Bronco fan and had season tickets for many years. He got the chance to go to the Super Bowl in 1977 in New Orleans with his brother-in-law Bill Huston. Bob and Janie were also avid supporters of many UNC athletic events.
Bob is survived by his wife, Janie; daughters Wendy, Jill and Amy; 6 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and great granddaughter Lilah Jane Smith.
A visitation is to be held from 4-8:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Allnutt Funeral Service, 6521 W. 20th Street, Greeley, CO 80634. Private services will be held Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Allnutt Funeral Service, Macy Chapel. Interment at Linn Grove Cemetery.
