She was born March 11, 1937, in Denver, to John and Katie Baumgartner of Prospect Valley, Colorado.
She graduated high school from Prospect Valley Centralized School in 1955 and received an A.B. degree
in Music Education from Colorado State College in Greeley (now University of Northern Colorado).
Lorraine married James (“Jim”) Witt on June 24, 1960, in Prospect Valley. They lived briefly near Kansas
City where Jim completed his degree as a physical therapist, before moving to New Jersey where she
taught music for schools in Elizabeth and Westfield.
In 1963, Lorraine and Jim moved to Mill Valley, California, where their son John was born. In 1968, Jim’s
job transfer with the Public Health Service took them to Savannah, Georgia, where their son Joel was born. In 1974, the family moved to Springfield, Missouri, where Lorraine taught private piano lessons to more than one hundred students. She served as choir director, soloist, and pianist for church music ministries in California, Georgia, and Missouri.
In 1994, Lorraine and Jim moved back to her parents’ house and farm in Prospect Valley, Colorado, to
care for her elderly parents. They served in the music and youth ministry for Prospect Community
Church before relocating in 2013 to Brentwood, Tennessee. She will be remembered as an accomplished
musician, energetic teacher, loving wife, devoted mother, and fun-loving “Nana” to her grandchildren.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sister Helen (Baumgartner) Huwa. She is
survived by her husband Jim, by her sons John (wife Mary) and Joel (wife Nicole) Witt, her grandchildren
Christina, Jason, Rachel, Natalie, and Ashlyn, and her niece Bonnie (Huwa) Reiff.
Visitation will be at Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 28th Street in Greeley, on May 30, 2018, from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m., followed by a funeral there at 2:00 pm. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 3400 28th Street, Greeley.
