George Margheim, Jr. of Platteville died Friday, July, 15, 2011 at North Colorado Medical Center in Hospice. He was born in Denver, Colorado to George and Marie Kathryn (Schmidt) Margheim.
On September 24, 1950 he married Phyllis Odenbaugh at the Methodist Church in Platteville. George and Phyllis were happily married for 60 years. They lived in Platteville for 52 years.
George received his high school diploma while serving in the U.S. Army from August 1, 1951 to July 9, 1953. He did his basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas and medical training at Fort Sam Houston and Fitzsimons Army Hospital. He served as a medic in Taegu, Korea during the Korean War at the Army Hospital, and on the front lines during heavy fighting. He worked for Weld County Road and Bridge for 40 years. He was an equipment operator, gravel foreman, hot plant supervisor, and later a road and bridge foreman. He was a trucking supervisor when he retired.
He was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church in Platteville, Colorado.
George played the Dulcimer with Bobby Bruntz and the Polka Kings for 30 years. He occasionally played with Adolph Lesser, Kyle Redman, Emmitt Horst and Stanley Odenbaugh. He loved to fish and enjoyed many family camping trips and playing cards with his wife and kids.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Odenbaugh) Margheim; daughters, Charlete (Gary) Rein and Kathleen (Jim) Waggoner; son-in-law, Jan (Georgia) LeMay; son, Rick (Colleen) Margheim; sisters, Diane (John) Templefeld and Glory Koch; brothers Gordon (Nancy) Margheim, Robert (Mel) Margheim, and Danny (Merna) Margheim; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Georgia LeMay who died April 16, 2011; brothers, Eddie and Paul Margheim; sisters, Leona Walter and Ruthie Bopp.
Visitation 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Funeral service 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Platteville. Interment at Mizpah Cemetery in Platteville.
