Born to Clarence and Gladys Hunter, Edward spent the first few years of his life in Afton, Wyoming before moving to Cody, Wyoming where he spent most of his grade school and high school years. It was during these formative years in Cody Ed developed life- long friendships.
After serving his country in the Korean War, Ed attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education. It was during his college years he met his lovely wife, Maxine Boyd. They married in Newcastle, Wyoming in 1956.
Ed’s bachelor’s degree served worthy as he taught science and coached basketball for the Wind River Indian Reservation in Fort Washakie, Wyoming for five years. After daughters Julie and Jody were born, Ed went back to Laramie and earned his Master’s in Education. Upon completion of his Masters he went on to Principle of Schools positions in Guernsey and Glenrock, Wyoming before accepting the Superintendent position in Basin where he served for 5 years. It was while in Basin his third daughter, Kathy Jo was born.
In 1970 the Hunters moved to Wheatland, Wyoming where Ed served as Superintendent of Schools for fifteen years. Son, Ehren, was born in Wheatland in 1974. Ed’s time in Wheatland was well spent as many accomplishments in reorganizing and reconstructing the school district were made. He also saw all 4 of his children graduate from Wheatland High School.
Ed was appointed to the Wyoming State Board of Education in 1973 by Governor Stan Hathaway, and he fulfilled a six year term. In 1976 Ed was one of ten to be nominated as “outstanding contributors to the field of education” by the National Kappa Delta Pi.
As Former School Board Chairman, Bill Johnson once said:
“He constantly strives to increase our quality of education. His grasp of our school budget is second to none. He has the respect of the students, teachers and patrons in the community. He is the best superintendent I have known in my almost 20 years of service on school boards in the county.”
Upon retiring as Superintendent for Wheatland School District, Ed and Maxine moved back to his hometown, Cody, Wyoming. With still many years of service left after retirement, he continued as Associate Director of the Wyoming School Board Association and the Director of the Kaiser Foundation.
