Betty Marie Thomsen Johnson Nelson was born June 24, 1933 in New Mexico. She was taken by train to Minden, NE where she was adopted by John and Clara Thomsen. Her early childhood was spent in Albin, Wyoming. The family moved to Greeley, Colorado for her school years, and she attended Cameron, Meeker Jr. High and Greeley High (Central), graduating in 1951.
Betty attended Colorado Teacher's College (now UNC) before transferring to University of Nebraska at Omaha, where she received a degree in Medical Technology. She returned to Greeley and worked for Weld County General Hospital, Greeley Clinic, UNC Health and Sunrise Community Health Center during her career.
Betty was married to Franklin R Johnson Jr on June 14, 1956. They moved to Windsor in the fall of 1959 where Frank taught Ag for twelve years. They lived in Windsor area until sons Thom and Kurt had graduated from Windsor High School. Betty was active in church, choir and Bible Study throughout her life.
In 1980 Frank and Betty spent a school year in Yarinacocha, Peru, at the Wycliffe Bible Translation Center. They returned home to the Johnson family farm until after Frank's death in October, 1993. Betty then moved back to her childhood home in Greeley to care for her aging mother. After her mother passed, Betty enjoyed traveling with many different friends and spending time with her grand-children.
Betty and a family friend, George Nelson, spent much time together enjoying the activities of their mutual grandchildren. They were married on April 1, 2001. They lived in Wiggins, and were active in the Baptist Church and Gideon's there.
Betty and George were moved to Kurt and Linda's house in Greeley in November of 2022 so that they could be cared for. After a short illness, George died July 11, 2023. In failing mental and physical health, Betty moved to Fairacres Manor in Greeley in November of 2023. It was there she passed into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 10, 2023.
Betty was survived by her two sons and their families.
They are as follows: Thom and wife Michelle, their daughter, Marie, of Windsor, and son Tim (Kristin), and grandson, Tomas of Moore OK. Kurt's family consists of his wife Linda, their daughter, Katie (Jason) Nau and their children, Emma, James and newborn daughter, Avery, of Yuma, CO. Kurt and Linda also have Jameson of Greeley, Larry (Anna) of Lenoir, TN. George's son, Warren (Carol) and their sons, Chris, Tyler and Bryce, grandchildren, Ryan and Addie, reside in TX, along with grand-children Karsyn, Tinley, Lyla and Pyper Nelson.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara Thomsen, and husbands, Frank Johnson and George Nelson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wycliffe Associates or The Gideon's International, in care of Allnutt Funeral Service - Macy Chapel.
A Viewing and Visitation will be held on December 20, 2023 at Allnutt Funeral Service - Macy Chapel, 6521 W. 20th Street, Greeley, Colorado 80634 at 4:00 p.m.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Eaton Cemetery on December 21, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.
