Bess was born in Ord, Nebraska, the eldest daughter of John and Anna Hrebec. She married Frank J. Fryzek on January 15, 1935 in Ord. After a brief stay in Washington State, they settled in Greeley where Bess remained for more than 70 years. They had three children; Ted of LaSalle, CO; Peggy (John) Holland of Franksville, WI; and John (Becky) Fryzek of Anchorage, AK. Bess had three grandsons: Robbie (Amy) Fryzek of Milliken, CO; Chad (Eileen) Holland of Wexford, PA; and Christopher (Jessica) Holland of St. Louis Park, MN. She also had eight great-grandchildren: Shannia, John, Adam, David, Jacob, Hannah, Finn, and Leo as well as one great-great-granddaughter, Raylen. She is also survived by two sisters: Marie of Santa Rosa, CA and Lillian of St. Paul, NE. Bess dearly loved her family and enjoyed spending time with all of them.
Bess worked for many years for the Greeley school district as a baker and then manager of the kitchens at Maplewood Elementary School and then Heath Junior High School. She was a wonderful cook and well-known for her delicious cinnamon rolls. She was also a proud Czech who baked great kolache and loved to polka.
After retirement, Bess spent many years catering civic and private groups. She was active in a bowling league, playing bingo at the senior center, gardening, and quilting. She once had a grand prize quilt at the county fair which went on to the Colorado State Fair. She was a lover of animals, cats in particular, and was often known to feed a stray, hungry critter. She was also a wonderful friend and neighbor to many.
Bess was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1982, as well as her brother, Oldrich. She will be deeply missed by friends and especially by her loving family.
Services for Bess Fryzek will be held at Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 W. 28th Street. Greeley, CO on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 with visitation at 12:00 and services at 1:00. Internment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens immediately following.
