William Lamar Gregg of Southlake, Texas, passed away peacefully at home July 4, 2020 at the age of 60, after a hard-fought battle with esophageal cancer. He was born Feb. 18, 1960 in Rising Star, Texas to Billy Joe Gregg and Nancy Carolyn Bell. He attended school in Rising Star and during high school was active in tennis, track, and football where he was named All District his junior year.
A versatile worker, possessing numerous skills, Lamar worked as a welder in the oil fields before becoming an aircraft mechanic for Southwest Airlines. During his time with Southwest he volunteered with the CAF in Midland, working on many vintage World War II airplanes. Having a love for gardening and wanting to be his own boss, Lamar started his own landscaping business which he ran for over 15 years. In 2014 he found his place as Director of Safety & Facilities at Horizon Medical Center where he was employed until his death. He was a wonderful boss and leader who went out of his way to perform small acts of kindness for his team, and they in turn were a great support to him throughout his time there and during his illness.
Lamar’s proudest achievement in life was his son Jason. As a single parent Lamar enrolled Jason in as many activities that they could participate in together. They became involved in Junior Drag Racing and together they built Jason’s racing car dubbed the “Tornado Taz” after Jason’s favorite cartoon character. They spent many weekends together at Texas Raceway in Kennedale winning numerous races, the highlight of which was in 1998 when Jason participated in the Junior Drag Racing Championships in Indianapolis Raceway Park, Indiana. Lamar helped make his 10-year-old son’s dream come true.
As Jason became involved in sports, everything from Pee Wee football to soccer, baseball, basketball, and wrestling, Lamar was there to help coach the team or lend his support every step of the way. Throughout the years he never missed a game, activity, or event that Jason was involved in and continued this support throughout Jason’s high school and college years. He raised his son to be a good hearted, caring man and a hard worker, much as he was himself. He recently commented to one of his friends that his one regret in life was that he would not be around to enjoy his grandchildren.
Lamar was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Bell, and his father, Billy Joe Gregg. He is survived by his son, Jason Gregg (Lauren) of Hebbronville, Texas; his brother Tony Gregg (Rita), nephew Preston Gregg (Taylor), all of Canton, North Carolina and niece Candy Gregg of Charlotte, North Carolina; niece Paige Gregg Farina (Brett) of Clayton, North Carolina; and step brother Jimmy Gregg (Libby) of Mountain City , Tennessee.
