He was born in Trautenau, Czechoslovakia on June 8, 1946. In pursuit of Freedom and Liberty, John and his family came to America in 1951 as refugees from Czechoslovakia.
John graduated from Amana High School, in Amana, Iowa. He joined the Navy in June 1965, and he was honorably discharged in May of 1967 where he received a National Defense Service Medal.
He was married to Sandra Cooper Honolka, devoted wife of 51 years, on September 6, 1969. John had a successful forty year career in the automobile industry in sales and sales management. When he was in sales, he was also known as “J.J.” as customers had a hard time remembering his last name.
He had a passion for classic cars, gardening, camping, fishing, barbecuing, and watching his beloved children and grandchildren play soccer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jarmila Honolka; sister, Eva Honolka Newman, and nephews, Cody Honolka, Jon Jeffrey Honolka, Michael Newman, Steve Newman, John Walker, and Sidney Walker.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Sandra Cooper Honolka; his daughter, Susan Missimo and husband, Derek; his son, Danny Honolka and wife, Carrie, and his beautiful grandchildren, Gabriella Missimo, Alexis Missimo, Carson Honolka, and Cayden Honolka. He leaves behind his sister, Pat Shaver; his brothers, Don Honolka and wife, Sharon, and Tom Honolka and wife, Leslie.
John was a devoted husband, Dad, and “Papa” with a giving heart. Life with John was never dull, He loved to have parties by the pool while he was barbecuing ribs and brisket. With a twinkle in his eyes, his rosy red cheeks, and his authentic white beard, he loved to be Santa at Christmas. He attended many parties, schools, and children hospitals as Santa. He also had great love and compassion for animals.
Funeral services will be 10:00am, Monday, December 7, 2020 at Foust and Son Funeral Home.
Burial with Navy honors will follow at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
