Dignity in a humble life is finding work for the first time as a 41 year old widow, with less than an eighth grade education from Bursley Elementary. Anna Geers (née Pausinga, and later spelled Pauzenga) cared for people–who often had no one to care for them–as an aide in various nursing homes, retiring from Mary Free Bed. Out of necessity, she worked until 80, providing all she could for her daughter Marlene Geers, and grandson, Brent Geers. Anna’s earthly reward was longevity to know five generations of family, particularly two great-granddaughters: Marlena and Melanie Geers.
Anna was the fifth of eight siblings–all born in one house on Port Sheldon Street SW between 1906 and 1929, the youngest sister, Betty (Clifford “Cliff”) Burgess (née Pausinga), of Byron Center, lives on. Welcoming her into Heaven is her husband, Jake Geers (also known as Jacob Rozema); daughter, Marlene; parents John and Minnie (née Edema); brothers August, Paul (Agnes Johnson), and Charles “Chuck” (Nellie Vande Kamp); and sisters Trena (William “Bill”) Goodyke (née Pausinga), Grace (Charles “Chuck”) Parm (née Pausinga), and baby Josie. The family thanks and acknowledges Anna’s brother-in-law, Gerrit Geers–a remarkable man who faithfully looked after his brother’s widow according to God’s pure and faultless word in James 1:27; and nephew Calvin “Cal” Geers, whom Anna endeared.
Anna gave everything every day, even though she had nothing substantial to give, and mostly to people unable to give anything in return. She lost more than she won in life but survived–always with a smile–the Great Depression, a world war, and COVID-19. She befriended many along the way. While Anna’s legacy is free from great accomplishments or possessions, it is in living a cheerful life–something that her grandson, his wife Ronda Geers (née Brown), and great-granddaughters will forever remember. God’s grace now shines upon her as she lives a deservedly abundant life in Heaven.
We love you GG!
