Leona Julienne Cowan, age 88, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, November 2, 2012. She was born on September 24, 1924 in Rodney, Ontario and moved to Ninove, Belgium as a young child. Leona and her family escaped back to Canada at the beginning of WWII. She met her future husband, Joseph while he was working on her grandfather’s farm. They were married on October 9, 1948 and moved to the United States in 1955.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph; brother, Philip; sister-in-law, Virginia and son-in-law, Tim. Surviving are children; Terrence (Valli) Cowan, Phyllis Minicucci, Gregory (Julie) Cowan and Daniel (Mary) Cowan; grandchildren, Amy (Derek) Fisher, Keri(Paul) Meteer, Tim (Nellie) Cowan, Becki Lair, Tessa Minicucci, Kimberly Cowan, Emily Cowan, Zach Cowan and Dave Cowan; great grandchildren; Clare, Theresa, Lucy and Joseph Meteer and Jack Fisher. Also surviving are brothers; Robert DeQuick, Joseph (Carmen) DeQuick and sister, Julienne (Bob) Penzien.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2275 Diamond Ave. with the Rev. George Darling as celebrant. The family will receive friends at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave. N.E., Grand Rapids on Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 2:00p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00. The family will also receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00a.m.
Those desiring may wish to consider a contribution to Spectrum Health Hospice or to the Arthritis Foundation in memory of Mrs. Cowan.
