James was born on July 1, 1935 in Grand Rapids to Earl and Laura (Albright) Carr. He graduated from Creston High School in 1953 and lived in Grand Rapids his whole life.
He was an avid Flea Market shopper and in later years enjoyed spending time at casinos. By trade he was a welder, but his real passion in life was bicycles. Known locally as “The Bike Guy,” James loved working on and fixing bikes of all kinds. He worked on bikes in the garage for over 60 years.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Laura; his wife Delores; his son Roger; his grandchildren Duane, Nicholas, David, and Michael; and his siblings Clara and Donald.
James is survived by his long-term partner Edith; his children Michael (Theresa), Brian (Elizabeth), and Todd (Carol); step-sons Doug (Sherry) Hamminger and Greg Hamminger; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday November 14th, 2023 at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505, at 11:00 AM. The family will receive guests a half hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Visitation will be held Monday November 13, 2023 at Reyers from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. James will be laid to rest at North Ensley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in James’ name can be made to Corso Hospice.
