After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Naifeh, a US Destroyer escort in the pacific fleet for three years. When his time in the military ended, he began working as a pressman for the San Angelo Standard Times and later at The Dallas Morning News. Between the two newspapers, his career as a pressman spanned for over 31 years, until his retirement in 1998.
During his time in the Navy, Randolph was introduced to the love of his life, Theresa Miller by her brothers, Jimmy and George Miller who were shipmates to Randolph. Through letters, he became pen pals with Theresa. After his time in the Navy, he and Theresa were married. Randolph joined shipmates Chuck and Harold, who married Rosie and Helen (sisters to Theresa) as five couples along with Jimmy Miller, George Miller and their wives as members of the family. Most interestingly, these families, pen pals, spent many years happily married and never divorced!
Randolph loved the outdoors as an avid fisherman and bird hunter. He also loved to woodwork, building porch swings for family and friends.
Randolph was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Theresa.
Randolph is survived by his three children; Dennis Whitby and wife Janene of Plano Texas; Susan Day; Randolph Whitby, Jr. and wife Rhonda of Weatherford, Texas; grandchildren, Rachel Day, Sarah Day, Michael Day, Carissa Jones (Dustin) and Felecia Wiley (Justin); great grandchildren, Danni Lou Driver, Audrey Rae, Cutler Hayes and Brazos Hyde.
A visitation for Randolph will be held Thursday, November 17, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bean-Massey-Burge Funeral Home, 2951 S. Belt Line Road, Grand Prairie, TX 75052.
