In these past weeks I find my thoughts turning often to Joe; memories of things we shared, times we were together  both in service and years later at Rantoul and Warner Robins.  
He will never be far from me, and perhaps one day we'll meet again in God's good time.

By the way -- I found the photo I mentioned in an earlier email.  As soon as I can get it copied, I'll send.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.   

We will always remember Joe as the strong and passionate man he was when we met him.  We could have easily be mistaken his strength for stoicism, but to sit and talk with Joe revealed a man that was dedicated to his family, his friends, those that he served with, and the community where he lived.  Joe lived for the reunions and his service to others (even after he “retired”) -- not to mention the picnics at the lake (and, yes, those unforgettable 4th of July fireworks).  Joe's  generosity was only surpassed by his experience – and we were blessed to know him and hear his stories.  We shared an appreciation for NY (you can take the boy out of Queens, but you can't take Queens out of the boy) and a life spent on the water.  

Joe was a great American and we are grateful for his legacy of service to our country, a legacy that Joe was proud to have passed on to his children and grandchildren. 

Godspeed, Joe, you've crossed the bar.

To Kathy, Greg and the rest of Joe's Family; my condolences on your huge loss.  There is a time for each of us that we have to let go and it is very hard to move on.  Our memories are here for us to cherish and the legacy that Joe left for all of you is a lifetime of great ones. The love he had for all of you is evident in the pictures... and we ALL thank him for the service to Our Country.  How blessed you are to have been loved by such a wonderful man.

To Joe Cashin's family, my wife and I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences on your loss.  I don't remember Joe working at Rantoul, but I believe he was in the other working party.  It was at Warner Robins that Joe and I got to know each other.  That's when we found out we had been on the same flight crew for a short time.  After VW-13 was decommissioned in Sept 1957, I was transferred to VW-11.  In December I flew with a crew to Lockheed Air Service at Idlewild (now JFK) and back to Pax River.  Joe was 1st radio on that crew.  On 14 January 1958 both Joe and I were scheduled to fly on a local training flight for approach practice for the flight deck portion of our crew.  The 2nd Radioman, Larry Rudder, asked Joe to let him take the flight as he was about to get married and needed the â€œskinsâ€ (flight pay).  Joe obliged.  The night before the flight, I was visiting my future wife in DC and got in about 0300.  Larry, who had the bunk next to me and had become good friends, asked me if I â€œwas really going to fly in the morningâ€.  I hesitated, then said â€œYou know, Larry,  I think your right, I'm too tiredâ€.  There was always somebody that would like to get the flight pay.   At 0930 the plane, R7V BuNo 128436 crashed into the woods short of the runway in a severe thunderstorm killing all aboard.  By a dual quirk of fate, Joe and I were spared and were able to live into our mid seventies.  To Joe, Blue skies and following winds, and when you see Larry and the rest of the crew, tell them I said hi.

Joe was a neighbor and friend. We worked together on the TBPOA board for many years. We all felt a tremondus loss when he first got sick.

He was an instant friend, and will be missed by all who knew him.

I remained close friends with Joe for 50 years from the time we first served together as officers in USS OKLAHOMA CITY (CLG-5).  Although personal contact was limited due to distance we remained in touch by letter, e-mail and phone calls throughout our friendship.  He will be missed!

I remember the day Joe walked ino the hanger at the Rantoul, Ill, museum in 2003.  The Willy Victor Group was in the midst of restoration of 141311.  He walked up with a broad grin and hand out and said to me,  "I'm Joe Cashin and I want to help.  What can I do?"   Joe fit in like the NAVY brother he always was.  After the 2005 reunion, Joe continued to work with our group at the Warner Robins museum as well.  We will always remember our shipmate and good friend. I first met Joe in the spring of '58 when we were on the same flight crew in VW-11.  He was a sailor's sailor, a professional, a patriot, and a fine human being.  I'm proud to have known him and to call him my friend.
