Born on December 3, 1936 in West Babylon, NY, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954, to pursue his lifelong love of the water. After achieving the rank of AT-1, he was accepted in Officer Candidate School (OCS) which he completed in 1962. His career included flying Air Cap Barrier patrols in a “Willy Victor” squadron, as well as duty on the USS Oklahoma City, the USS Implicit, USS Illusive and the USS Fox. He also served his country proudly for three tours in Vietnam.
Post retirement, Joe enjoyed a successful career as a software engineer in the private sector. He gave of himself through volunteer work serving on the ETMC hospital board, assisting in restoration of Willy Victor planes, and providing his expertise to the development of the Henderson County emergency management plan. He is survived by his daughter Kathy Cashin McKinney and husband Greg McKinney, of McKinney Texas; His son Patrick K. Cashin and daughter in-law Janet S. Cashin, of Pearland Texas; He is also survived by grandchildren, Erin Clift,(Pearland, TX), Chelsea Porath (Dallas, Tx), and Megan Lish (Dallas, Tx); Brandon McKinney (Mesquite, TX) and Nathan A. Cashin (GM-3 USN); and five great-grandchildren, Emily, Kyla, Sammy, Daniella, and Elijah (Pearland, Texas).
