David, a longtime resident of Grand Prairie, was born in Marion, Indiana on February 9, 1946 to Charles and Mildred Johnson. The family moved to Irving, Texas in 1952 when he was 6 years old. He attended Irving High School graduating in 1964. He then went on to graduate with a degree in marketing from The University of North Texas where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. It is there that he met his wife of 51 years Judy Moon Johnson. They married on September 14, 1968 and then moved to Austin, Texas where he worked for RJ Reynolds. They then returned to his wife’s hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas to raise their family and start his State Farm Insurance agency in 1974. He retired from the company, an agent of 41 years, on January 31, 2015.
Also actively engaged in his community over the years, David was a past President of the Grand Prairie Noon Optimist Club, Senior Warden at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, and many-times President and longtime treasurer of the St. Andrews Men’s Club. His outstanding work over the years with his clients garnered him many honors from State Farm, including recognition as a qualifier for the Bronze Tablet and then on to the Silver Scroll award; one of the highest honors an agent could receive. He was very involved with his family including serving as coach for 12 years for his daughter’s championship winning softball team, the State Farm Good Neighbors. When David wasn’t working or coaching, he enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys with his daughter and yelling at the referees. He also enjoyed those long nights at the church preparing the Thanksgiving turkeys for his fellow parishioners.
