Linda was my surveying partner during the Colorado School of Mines’ (CSM) Summer Field Session that we both took in 1977.  As part of that course, we had to pack our transit, level, tripod, chain, stakes and gear up and down the hillside at the foot of Lookout Mountain above Golden, the mountainside above Idaho Springs, and through the tunnels at CSM’s underground mine.  The course was 6 long days a week for 6 weeks.  Linda endured the summer heat and physical demands in stride, always had a positive attitude, and never once complained.  I remember her telling me about her opportunity to work for the U.S. Forest Service on a CO-OP that fall and how excited that she was.

I recognize Linda to be a pioneer in the Mining Industry.  At the time, I believe that she was one of five women that were enrolled in CSM’s Mining Engineering, and undoubtedly one of the first women to graduate from the program.  It is also worth noting that it wasn’t until the fall semester of 1976 that CSM hired its first ever female professor (Dr. Julie Alexander).  At that time, the Geoscience fields, including Mining Engineering, had historically been considered male-exclusive.  Linda helped break through the glass door.

It was my pleasure to have known you, Linda.  Your time here was too short.  Rest in peace.

I worked with Linda nearly 20 years in the Forest Service.  She was always professional and a straight shooter.  Her quirky way of approaching her work would often brought a smile to my face.  She will be missed.
