Leonard was born on March 14, 1939 in Powell, Wyoming from the union of Virgil and Dollie Hayes. He spent his childhood in Bozeman, Montana and graduated from the Bozeman High School. He attended the Montana State University-Northern in Havre, Montana.
Leonard married Shirley Tucker on January 9, 1960 in Bozeman, Montana, she survives.
Leonard was a resident of the Grand Junction area for the past fifty-seven years. He had previously lived in the Denver area. He was a Right of Way Agent with the Colorado Highway Department and an honorably discharged Army/Air Force National Guardsman.
He enjoyed taking care of his home and yard work and spending camping trips with his family.
Leonard leaves behind his wife of sixty-three years, Shirley Hayes, two sons; Bruce (Selena) Hayes of Grand Junction, CO., and Loren (Cheryl) Hayes of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a daughter, Dana (Jeff) Sullivan of Grand Junction, CO., a sister, Evelyn (Archie) Featherston of Montrose, Colorado. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, one great grandchild to cherish his memory.
