Kay J Wright

She was born July 3rd, 1936 to Frances and Fern Cook in Grand Junction, CO. She attended schools there and graduated from Grand Junction High School. Shortly after, she married Billy Gene Wright who preceded her in death in October of 1976. While married to Bill, she traveled to various mining camps and they finally settled in Silverton, CO. There they raised their two children and made many lasting friendships and memories. It was a very good time in her life.

After losing her husband, she moved to Durango, CO and managed the Gypsy Motel for several years. She then returned home to Grand Junction where she worked at CoorsTek until retiring.

Kay was a card playing enthusiast! After returning to Grand Junction, she started a singles bridge club and advertised in the paper for members. From this group she developed some wonderful friendships. She always cherished her friendships! Later, Kay joined a cribbage club and was thrilled when she got recognition in the newspaper for the highest score. She never took it seriously and was always in it for the fun and laughs.

Kay was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a devoted wife and mother and loved her grandchildren more than life. She has been blessed with beautiful great-grandchildren that lit up her life. Her motto was “Of all the names I’ve been called, I like Grandma the best.”

Kay had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. Her generous spirit and accepting nature drew people to her and left them feeling special and valued. We will miss her warm hugs; quirky sayings and toasts; chicken noodle dinners; happy hours (always a delight); time on the porch with neighbors; love of dogs; and her deep love of family. Her wish was that everyone respect each other.

Kay was very appreciative of the compassionate care she received from HopeWest and the amazing people who made her transition as comfortable as possible. To all her friends and family who kept in touch through the years – thank you. She felt truly blessed to have had such a wonderful life filled with lots of love and laughter and the best friends and neighbors anyone could ask for.

Kay is survived by her daughter, Karen Sabra; daughter-in-law, Marlene Wright; sister-in-law, Donna Cook; grandchildren, Omar (Monique) Sabra, Nicole (Allen) McKinley, and Amanda (Jordan) Passehl; and great-grandchildren, Kiarra, Zayden, Haizley, and Knox. She is also survived by nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart. Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son, William G. Wright, and brother, Hugh Cook.
