It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of John Edward Schoonover on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, in Grand Junction, Colorado. Surrounded by family, John passed away at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication that will forever remain in our hearts.
A proud Veteran of the United States Army, John served his country with honor for 24 years, achieving the rank of Warrant Officer CW2. Following his military career, his commitment to service continued with 36 years of dedicated work as a Biomedical Technician at the VA Hospital, where he touched countless lives.
In retirement, John’s zest for life remained boundless. He poured his creativity and craftsmanship into founding JCD Custom Laser Engraving and Woodwork, crafting heartfelt treasures for family and friends. He also pursued his passion for gold recovery, embarking on many ventures with his dear friend, Ron Unfred.
Born into a military family, John spent a good portion of his childhood in Heidelberg, Germany, where he graduated high school and became fluent in the German language. His connection to Germany was a source of pride, reflecting his deep bond with his mother’s heritage.
An avid outdoorsman, John found peace and adventure in fishing, hunting, and gold prospecting. Although not born in Alaska, he often described the decade he and his family spent in Eagle River and Wasilla, as some of the best years of his life. His stories of snow machines, moose hunting, camping, and fishing trips embodied his adventurous spirit and love for the wilderness.
Known for his larger-than-life personality, endless resourcefulness, and loving nature, John brought light to every room he entered. His many talents, from crafting personalized gifts to sharing gold-panning tips, made him a beloved presence in the lives of all who knew him. Above all, he was a devoted family man, taking immense pride in his children and grandchildren, whom he celebrated at every game, hunt, and milestone.
John was the rock of his family—a source of strength, love, and unyielding support. His absence leaves a void that words cannot fill, but his memory will be a beacon of light for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Charlotte Schoonover; his loving mother, Waltraud Ellis; and his sister, Karen Horan. He was the proud father of his daughters, Tanya Harris and Jennifer Rollins, and the cherished father-in-law of Blair Rollins. He was an adoring grandfather to his beloved grandchildren: Jordan Harris, Teagan Harris, Kennedy Rollins, Joseph Harris, and Benjamin Rollins. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Schoonover.
A graveside service will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Monday, December 16, at 3:00 p.m.
As this is a graveside-only service, flowers or any other support may be sent to the Schoonover residence at:
446 Meadows Way, Grand Junction, CO 81507
The Schoonover, Rollins, and Harris families extend their deepest gratitude to all who have offered love and support during this unimaginable loss. John’s life was a testament to kindness, loyalty, and adventure, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
