Jason Lowell Neilson (1975-2024), proud father of two children, master of adventure, all-around great guy, 49, of Snowmass, CO, died in his home on November 12, 2024 after a courageous battle with an aggressive cancer. He was born in Sasebo, Japan on June 1, 1975 to mother, Terri Carter and father, Lowell Neilson. Jason was a strong-willed child from the start who always insisted on doing physical feats he probably shouldn’t have done, but through fierce determination he did them and excelled.
Jason attended Clovis West High School in Clovis, CA, and Fresno City College in Fresno, CA, and continued his education at Mesa Flight School in Farmington, New Mexico. He was absolutely brilliant at sports and took a special interest in soccer in high school and college and then found a home playing rugby for clubs in Fresno, Aspen and New Zealand.
Having a deep connection to the mountains, Jason settled down in Snowmass, CO, where he worked hard to support his family and his adventurous lifestyle. He loved the outdoors and was an avid backpacker and hiker summiting many of Colorado’s 14ers. He became an accomplished pilot, skier and snowboarder. He was especially inspired by his work with Challenge Aspen helping disabled children learn how to ski and snowboard.
Jason was a devoted and loving father to his children, Carter and Kai. He was deeply involved in their lives and enjoyed watching them grow into the strong, independent and wonderful young people they are.
Those who knew Jason loved him. He was kind, loving and a generous soul who had an unbridled passion for life. Jason found happiness lending a helping hand without expecting anything in return. He was a relationship aficionado who never met a stranger and created family everywhere. His charismatic and energetic personality resulted in lifelong friendships and supportive networks all over the world. It should also be mentioned that Jason had an incredible strength that always dazzled and impressed.
Jason is survived by his children, Kai (daughter) and Carter (son); parents and their spouses, Terri Carter and Randy Carter and Lowell Neilson and Carol Neilson; siblings and their spouses, Jacqueline Neilson (sister) and Marta Moreno (spouse), Caleb Neilson (brother) and Mariel Neilson (spouse), and Megan Carter Sandoval (sister) and Tony Sandoval (spouse); nieces and nephews, Troy, Sofia, Quinn, Rhett, Lukas, and Layla.
Jason was taken from us far too soon. We are heartbroken and will deeply miss him and the pure joy his spirit embodied. There will be a Celebration of Life service on December 10, 2024 in Snowmass, CO, at Base Camp at 2pm. Donations in Jason’s name may be made to Challenge Aspen (https://challengeaspen.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/challengeaspen/donation.jsp?campaign=60&)
