Dennis was born on July 5, 1933 in St. Helena, California from the union of Joseph L. and Alna V. Lowery. He spent his early childhood in Norwood, Colorado later moving to Grand Junction in 1942. He attended St. Joseph's Primary School and Grand Junction High School, graduating in 1951. He graduated from CU Boulder in 1955 with a degree in Journalism.
Dennis married Alma Sue Watkins in 1953, she preceded him in death in 2008.
Dennis worked at area newspapers and trade magazines in the 50’s and 60’s and was Managing Editor of Grand Junction Morning Sun from 1957-59. In the early 60's he founded Lowery Business Publications which lead to a position in advertising and marketing at Dixson Incorporated. He went on to become became head of the Consumer Products Division of Dixson, Inc. working in manufacturing and marketing for about 30 years.
In 1988, he acquired Dixson’s gift manufacturing division and moved it to Clifton, Colorado as Creative Concepts of Colorado until it was sold in 1995.
After retiring from business he worked part time for 20 years as a reservist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency on disasters around the country. In this role he provided public information to the media and was a liaison with Congressional Offices.
He was Board Member and Past President of Mesa State College Foundation in the 1990's. He served on the JUCO Committee. He was also active in the Vineyard Homeowners Association on the Redlands.
Dennis loved traveling throughout the US, Europe and Asia. He enjoyed camping all over Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. He also enjoyed golf, photography, computers and reading. He was a private pilot. He spent may years exploring Lake Powell with family and friends. He was stayed active organizing and coordinating the GJHS Class of ’51 reunions every five years.
Dennis leaves behind his two children, Kimberly (Richard) Babbel of Clifton, Colorado, Daniel (Marsha) Lowery of Boise, Idaho, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister Laurel Mayberry.
