Anna was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of William and Bella Peters. Anna met the love of her life, James "Harry" Cox while he was in the Navy and they were married in Providence in 1944. Two years later they moved to DeBeque, Colorado which he referred to as "Paradise". But she left the city to live in the middle of nowhere - with no running water, no indoor plumbing, no neighbors, and no (much loved) Catholic Church. In DeBeque they raised Anna's sister, Jeanette, and their own five children. She worked in the school lunch room for several years and each fall found her packing peaches in Palisade. They moved to Fruita in 1986 where they both pursued a lifelong hobby of embroidering and hand quilting beautiful treasured quilts. They moved to Mesa View Retirement Community in 2010. James died in June of 2013, after nearly 68 years of marriage.
Anna is survived by three sons, Kenny (Sandy); Tom "Pudge" (Julia), and Tim; one daughter, Joyce Peugh (Dan), and daughter-in-law, Sue. She left seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death of her two sisters, Jeanette and Florence; her brother, Louie; son, Russ, and two grandsons, Shane and Scott Cox.
Anna was loved by everyone she met. Many people have referred to her as being their "Very Best Friend", and indeed she was. Everyone who stepped through her door became an immediate "friend". She enjoyed her family and liked nothing more than lots of company and her church. She was an excellent cook and canned extensively every year.
Anna loved those who helped her to continue to live independently at Mesa View including her Hospice Home Care Team of Janine, Terry, Teresa, and Dan as well as care givers, Debbie, Cheri, Heather, Tiffany, Amanda, and Beverly.
A Rosary Service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, and a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 513 East Aspen, Fruita. Anna's ashes will be placed at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery with her husband's where they will rest together.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to HopeWest Hospice at 3090B North 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506, or Sacred Heart Building Fund at Sacred Heart Parish Office, 433 East Aspen, Fruita, CO 81521.
