Lloyd was born October 2, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois to John and Isabell (Hunter) Stokes. At the age of 5, his parents moved the family back to Sarnia Ontario Canada. Lloyd attended school in Sarnia and at the age of 17 he quit school and got a job working on the docks at Imperial Oil as a welders assistant. At age 18, he decided to join the American Navy, serving in the Amphibious forces during World War II. His ship was LSM 211. He participated in the Battle for Iwo Jima February 20, 1945.
While he was in the Navy, he served as an electrician on the ship. After serving for almost 4 years, the war was ending and he returned home to Sarnia and to his job at the Imperial Oil. Lloyd decided after working as an electrician that was what he wanted to do, so he quit his job at the refinery and moved to Port Huron. Lloyd got a job at a small engine repair shop and met his wife Hazel Simpson who worked at a laundry nearby. They married in April of 1948 and had 3 children. He had gotten a job at the Autolite factory but the work wasn't steady. In 1962 he came to Flint and got a job at the V8 Engine plant for General Motors working in skilled trades.
His family soon moved to Flint. Lloyd retired at the age of 75 in 1999. Lloyd lost his wife Hazel to cancer in 1979 and his son Alan to cancer in 2005. Lloyd was a hard worker, loyal and a loving husband and father. He loved the game of hockey. His favorite team was the Maple Leafs but he always said if they were wearing skates and had a stick and a puck he'd watch any game. He also loved to dance. He had a stack of records a mile high. He enjoyed listening to his records with his headphones on.
Lloyd leaves behind daughter Sharon Talbot and husband Jeff of Flushing, MI and son Brian Stokes of Nashville, TN; grandchildren Amy Yax and husband Andy of Southfield, Ian Carsten and wife Jennifer of Grosse Pointe Park, Dan Carsten of Grosse Pointe Park, Kyle Stokes of Croswell, Kevin Stokes and wife Erin of Almont, and Alexis Cain and husband Austin of Howell; and great grandchildren Zander, Alexyne, Skylar, Hayden, Macailah, Broderick, Alana, Arden, Jameson and Jackson.
