Clarence (Clay) Herbert Muerhoff of Grand Blanc, MI, Age 83, passed away on Monday January 2, 2023. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 12, 2023 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 11804 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, MI. A Celebration of Life will be held at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 South Saginaw Street, Grand Banc, MI on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 4:00pm-8:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Clay’s name (www.alz.org).
Clay was born in Fort Madison Iowa in February of 1939 the son of the late Frederick Francis and Anna Clara Muerhoff. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1957 and married Norma Jean Mason (daughter of Mark and Anna Marie) in 1959. He enlisted in the US Army Reserves and completed training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and served for many years as a reservist. Clay was granted a college scholarship in March 1959 from General Motors Institute and he and Norma relocated to Flint, MI in 1960 where he completed cooperative education matriculating with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering while also gaining valuable experience as an employee of AC Spark Plug Division of General Motors. He went on to receive a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1968. In 1973, he was promoted to Superintendent of Quality Control at the AC Spark Plug Milwaukee Division in Oak Creek, WI and relocated his family to Brookfield, WI. After receiving numerous promotions and awards, Clay was transferred to the AC Spark Plug Division in Southampton, England where he was responsible for total plant manufacturing operations. He returned to the US as Operations Manager at the AC Park Plug plant in Flint, Mi (which had become the Rochester Division of General Motors) where his career began. He retired in June of 1989 after 33 very successful years with General Motors. Clay was an avid investor and stock trader; he enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending time with his children and grandchildren, playing cards and watching the University of Michigan Wolverines football games.
He is survived by his wife Norma of 63 years, seven children: Wesley, Anthony Scott (Jodi), Karen Mattern (Pete), Jean Schweda (Jim), Donna Flint (Tim), Eric (Jim), and Nancy Pate (Rob), 9 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers (Vincent and sister-in-law Betty Muerhoff, Arthur, and Lester).
