Philip Su, age 31, died on March 1, 2022, at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center. He unexpectedly passed from complications of covid-19 despite extensive treatment in the intensive care unit and heroic efforts taken by the medical team.
Philip spent his childhood years as an intelligent yet mischievous child who was always getting into trouble and having fun with his two brothers James and Daniel Su. When you’d watch them jest and tease each other, you’d instantly see that they had this special brotherly bond. Despite the stories of “borrowing” each other’s Super Mario chair resulting in stitches, or breaking staplers with dumbbells, their love for one another is unconditional and no matter what they will always have each other’s backs.
Ever since Philip was in high school, he was passionate about medicine, a field to which he devoted his life. This year was Philip’s last year as a resident physician. During the pandemic, he worked on the frontlines directly with patients with covid-19, always completing his toughest rotations in the intensive care unit with compassion and grace. His passion for service extended to medical missions including trips to Belize, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. He was loved by his patients and co-residents, and has touched so many lives in so many ways. Philip’s sweet, caring, and humorous nature made him beloved by all those around him. To know him was to love him.
Three days prior to his passing he married the love of his life, Jacqueline Sun, and spent the last few days of his life surrounded by his closest friends and family. Jackie and Phil met the summer before starting medical school in 2015, and quickly became best friends and seat partners in class. Having similar last names they were placed in the same lab groups and eventually became study partners. You could never find a S-U-N without a S-U, and eventually Philip proposed to Jackie surrounded by colorful deep canyons and soaring cliffs in Zion National Park.
Philip was known to always put his loved ones, community, and patients first. Selfless in both his thoughts and actions, he filled our lives with so much kindness and warmth. He worked with humility and diligence to make sure we were all happy and taken care of. We miss him so much; his silliness, sideways grin, punny jokes, and food recommendations. We are comforted knowing that Philip is enjoying the bliss of heaven, likely eating a Chipotle bowl and surrounded by loved ones that we all miss dearly.
Philip is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Sun, parents, Patrick and Carole Su, and brothers, James and Daniel Su. Funeral services will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Gotha, Florida at 11 am Friday, April 8, 2022. We appreciate your support in any way possible. All proceeds will go directly to Philip’s family to help cover funeral and medical expenses. Donations can be made through https://gofund.me/0ac0905f.
