of Clermont, Florida. Mr. Holmes was the son of Lenore Hall and Chester Hill Holmes and was born Oct. 10, 1913,
Coraopolis, PA. The family moved several times due to the poor health of his father. He attended schools in
Pittsburgh, Miami, Atlanta, and Birmingham, Alabama. It was in Birmingham that he met his wife-to-be, Mamie
Lou Self. They were in fifth grade. They married in 1934, and were married 72 years until her death in 2006.
Mr. Holmes began his working career with Republic Steel in Birmingham then moved to Nashville, Tennessee
to work for Acme Fast Freight. It was with this company that he worked through World War II as it was considered
vital to the war effort. After the war, he went to work for Pitney-Bowes Postage Meter Machine Co. as a salesman
and then manager. He worked for that company for 35 years and opened and managed branches in Nashville,
Greensboro, Richmond, Charlotte, and Atlanta. After retiring, he moved from his home in Cumming, GA, to
Orlando, Florida in 1983. Mr. Holmes was an avid golfer and had played courses throughout the USA and in
Scotland. He and his wife also enjoyed travelling in their Airstream Trailer to Mexico, Canada, and coast to
coast in the US. In his youth Mr. Holmes had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as did his son, Harry Holmes, Jr.
and two great-grandsons, David and Caleb Sanders. Mr. Holmes is survived by his children: Mary Nell Fruit,
Zellwood, FL; Ann Holbrook (Terry Pyle), Sapphire, NC; Harry Holmes, Jr.(Carol), Chesapeake, VA; Robert
Byron Holmes (Nancy), Midlothian, VA; ; Grandchildren: William D. Sanders (Anita), Lake City, FL; Elizabeth
Evans (Bob Mullins), Clermont, FL; Mary Lou Still (Edward), Stone Mt.,GA; Michael Norman (Margaret),
Snellville, GA; Amy Justus, Orlando, FL; Byron Norman (Kara), Tucker, GA; Kevin Darden (Sonja), Tallahassee;
FL; Suzanne Norman (Jeff Morris), Gainesville, GA; Janice Krivan (Justin), Longwood, FL; Byron W. Holmes
(Mary Brantley), Richmond, VA; Laura Lee Sager (Christian), Va.Beach, VA; Kedron Holmes, Richmond, VA;
Claire Hicks (David), Newport, R.I.; Five Step-Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren, two Nephews and their
families. In addition to his wife, Mr. Holmes is preceded in death by his sister, Jessie Holmes Haddick and
his great-grandson, Justin James Garver. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Central
Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America, 1951 S. Orange Blossom Trail, Apopka, Florida 32703, or to the
Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park, Tavares, Florida 32778. A Memorial Service for Mr. Holmes will be
held Sat., Feb. 4, at 4:00 p.m., at Woodlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home, Gotha, Florida 34734
