Dr. Gustavo Bustamante Mays, M.D., 83, was called to his heavenly home on January 23, 2024, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. A native of Central America, he embarked on a journey of healing and service, with warmth and generosity of his heritage throughout his remarkable life.
Dr. Bustamante graduated from the esteemed University of San Carlos Medical School in Guatemala City, Guatemala, before answering a divine calling to serve in the United States. He pursued his medical calling with unwavering dedication, completing his Surgical Residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center and later earning a staff appointment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. His compassionate care and commitment to healing led him to serve as Chief of Surgery in Caguas, Puerto Rico. A distinguished member of the International College of Surgeons and the Orange County Medical Society, Dr. Bustamante's exemplary service was recognized by Advent Health (formerly Florida Hospital) for over 50 years of unwavering commitment, where he touched countless lives there and other renowned Central Florida Hospitals, with his skilled hands and kind heart.
Upon settling in Orlando, Dr. Bustamante became a beloved member of the Baptist community, where his faith and compassion flourished. He shared the light of Christ through his service at the Church at The Cross Orlando, where his presence and prayers uplifted many souls.
Dr. Bustamante's life was a testament to the power of faith and service. He was a devoted husband to Elisa, his beloved wife of over 60 years, and a loving father to his four sons: Nilton (Lynn), Edson (Donna), Marvin (Ahinoam), and Ronnie (Sara). His family was the cornerstone of his joy, and he was blessed with 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, each a cherished blessing from the Lord.
In addition to his medical achievements, Dr. Bustamante's heart overflowed with compassion for those in need. He championed causes close to his heart, advocating for women's and children's health and supporting the Boy Scouts of America. His legacy of love and service will continue to inspire generations to come.
Dr. Bustamante's intellectual curiosity and love for language and music enriched his daily life. Whether perusing the morning newspaper or engaging in spirited conversations on the tennis court, golf course, or soccer field, he exuded warmth and humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
In recognition of his life and legacy, the family kindly requests that charitable gifts be made to the Church at The Cross Orlando, continuing Dr. Bustamante's mission of spreading God's love and grace.

A visitation for Gustavo will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Church of the Cross, 700 Good Homes Road, Orlando, FL 32818. A funeral service will occur Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 11:00 AM, also at Church of the Cross, 700 Good Homes Road, Orlando, FL 32818.
