She was an ordained minister in the Salvation Army church from 1946 to 1948 in VA and WV, Cub Scout Den Mother for several years (MD and VA), Sunbeam leader (SC), Sunday School Superintendent (Jacksonville, FL), Brownie / Junior / Cadet / Senior Girl Scout Leader, Girl Scout Council Member (Gateway and Monroe Councils), Pied Piper (Tri-County Council) (Jacksonville and Key West), Local PTA President (Jacksonville), Youth leader for Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) in Jacksonville, Navy Officer Wives Association (many posts), choir member for her various churches, Navy Relief Store (Director) in Key West, “Sacred Dancers” Director and Founder (Grace United Methodist Church – Orlando). She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars (LAVFW) Post 2093 (Orlando) and Life member of The Retired Officer Association Auxiliary (TROA).
One of her greatest joys was traveling across the country when her husband's (Bob) duty stations changed with her 6 children and sharing her love that she held for this country. She instilled patriotism into her children and a love for the Lord along the way.
Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her one true soul-mate of 61 years, Robert E. Smith; her parents; sister, Mellie Beth; daughter-in-law, Ceil Smith; and brother-in-law, Robert Adams.
Her survivors include: three sons, Robert, John and Don (Helen) Smith; three daughters, Debra (Dave) Burpee, Coreen (Edwin) Benedetto and Doreen (David) Barrowman; eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating her life and her reuniting with her beloved husband (Bob) will be held on Saturday, July 2 (their 63rd wedding anniversary). The service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Pine Hills, 1400 N. Nowell Street, Orlando, on 2 July, 2011 at 1:00 PM.
Interment will be at a later date at Florida National Cemetery-Bushnell.
