宣樹浩博士於一九七四年由佛羅里達州遷居芝加哥, 任職阿岡國家實驗室,獻身科技研究工作四十餘載,為阿岡國家實驗室的資深研究員,並擔任感測器及儀器研究部門的經理工作。宣博士於二零一四年自阿岡國家實驗室榮退後,仍在實驗室兼職從事研究的工作,直到二零一六年遷居美國內華達州的拉斯維加斯。宣樹浩博士在學術研究方面卓著優越,尤其專注於聲波,超聲波,及化學物理科技在能源及國家安全上的應用研究。曾於1994及2011年分別榮獲美國研究發明獎(R&D100),該獎項又稱為研究發明的奧斯卡獎,頒發給全世界當年一百個最具有應用價值的研究發明。宣博士曾兩次獲頒阿岡國家實驗室研究貢獻獎,並且榮獲十幾項美國專利和多項專利申請,共發表近百篇學術論文及著作。
宣樹浩博士在從事科技研究工作之餘亦在芝加哥華人僑社擔任義工及領導,對芝加哥華人僑社貢獻良多。曾經擔任過美中華人學術聯誼會會長,大芝加哥新年晚會總幹事,芝華藝坊坊長,為芝加哥區臺灣同鄉聯誼會會長等多項職務。更鮮為人知的是宣樹浩博士是位於芝加哥西郊的華人老人寓所的創始董事,該寓所宣博士等僑社人士向伊利諾州政府申請贊助所成立的,嘉惠照顧芝加哥華僑耆老。宣樹浩博士另一面最為人讚許的是他的急智詼諧,能編善演,曾在芝加哥華人僑社無數次的聯誼活動和晚會裡擔任主持或表演。並於擔任大芝加哥新年晚會總幹事工作時,更在芝加哥海軍碼頭演藝廳舉辦年度的華人盛會,向美國主流社會及伊利諾州的政經界推介中華文化及華人的實力與貢獻。宣樹浩博士為人公正多智,直言仗義,並無私助人,為芝加哥華人僑社所尊敬景仰。
Dr. Sheen moved to Chicago in 1974 and worked at Argonne National Laboratory. After forty years of service, Dr. Sheen retired as a Senior Engineer and Manager of Sensors and Instruction. He then worked as a Special Term Appointee until he moved to Las Vegas in 2016. Dr. Sheen was an expert in sensor and instrumentation development and applications to industrial process control, nondestructive evaluation, and remote sensing and measurement. His primary research was in acoustic and ultrasonic technology and their applications in measurements, especially for the Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Sheen received two R&D100 awards in 1994 and 2011. The R&D100 award is known as the “Oscars” of R&D that serves as the most prestigious innovation awards program for the past 55 years, honoring great R&D pioneers and their revolutionary ideas in science and technology. Dr. Sheen has authored more than 90 papers and holds a number of U.S. patents and patent disclosures.
In additional to his engagement in scientific and technological research, Dr. Sheen also devoted his time and effort in promoting Chinese culture and led the Chicago Chinese community. He served as president of the Mid-America Chinese American Professional Association, the Taiwan Benevolent Association of Chicago, the Performing Arts of Chinese Americans in Greater Chicago, the Chinese New Year Party of Greater Chicago (UNITY), and many others. He was also one of the founding members of the Chinese American Senior Apartment of Chicago Suburbs, which has been the home of many low-income Chinese American seniors.
Dr. Sheen was also admired for his wit and humor. He was also great at performing arts and an excellent sketch writer. He performed at a number of events and also served as the master of ceremonies within the Chicago Chinese American community. While serving as the general director of UNITY, he hosted the annual Chinese New Year Party at Navy Pier’s grand ballroom of Chicago to introduce Chinese culture and to demonstrate the strength and contribution of the Chinese community to the mainstream American society and to the Illinois political and economic circles. Because of his fairness, righteousness, wisdom, unselfishness, and contribution, Dr. Sheen has earned the respect and admiration of all those he has met especially within the Chicago Overseas Chinese community.
Shuh-Haw Sheen was the youngest of 10 siblings, a husband to Daria, a father to Albert and Philip, a father-in-law to Wendy, a grandfather to Chloe and Evelyn, a great uncle to a countless number of relatives, and a true friend to many.
