Robert Clinton Mercer, age 90, of Goodyear, AZ died August 26, 2019, in Goodyear, AZ. He was born November 19, 1928, in New Wilmington, PA, the youngest of three sons born to Wallace and Agnes Mercer. Bob graduated from West Middlesex High School. He went to work for GATX right out of high school and worked his way up to plant manager, a title which he held when he retired 42 years later. He was a Past Master 32nd Degree Mason and held the distinction of being the oldest living Past Master.
After graduation, Bob was introduced through a blind date to a young woman named Evelyn. Bob courted Evelyn for three years before marrying her. They were married for 71 years.
Bob and Evelyn loved to travel in their RV. When Bob retired, the two traveled around the country looking for just the right spot to live. They decided on the Pebble Creek community where they have forged great friendships with their neighbors. He enjoyed singing in the Pebble Creek Chorus for many years. He also enjoyed woodworking, was very handy and could fix anything.
Bob was always there for his children. He volunteered as a Boy Scout leader for his son’s troop in Pennsylvania. Though his work took the family to live in a variety of states including, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Texas, California, Indiana, and Ohio, he was always aware of the impact that moving had on his children. When the company transferred him to California in his daughter’s senior year of high school, Bob moved by himself so that his daughter could graduate with her friends. He was proud of his children and loved all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife, Evelyn Mercer; daughter, Gail Banker (Dave); son, James Mercer (April); four grandchildren, Allison, Kendall, Brett, Michelle, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 7, 2019, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 925 N Sarival Ave, Goodyear, AZ 85338.
