Reverend Gilberto Vargas, son of Esther Vargas Gutierrez and Anastasio Vargas, passed on to heaven on March 10, 2022. He was 98 years old. Gilberto was born in Santa Barbara, Antioquia Colombia and was a 1 of 16 children. He was a moving picture salesman in Colombia until 1953 when he dedicated his life to the Church. He arrived in the United States in 1953 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University and later attended Princeton Theological Seminary. He interpreted for Fidel Castro and attended Albert Einstein’s ethics seminar. There he graduated in 1961 and became a Presbyterian minister. He was a minister in El Paso, Texas (1961- 1963), then Bogota, Colombia between 1963-1969 then Hartford, Connecticut (1969-1974) and in Los Angeles California (1974-1976) . At the height of his career, he was the President of the Colombian Presbyterian Synod and Rector (Administrative Principle) of the Colegio Americano in Bogota, Colombia between 1976-1983.
Gilberto was a passionate, fun and driven servant to God as well as a loving and supporting husband and life partner to Priscilla Vargas. He also was a loving and supporting father to his three sons, Jorge W. Vargas, Gil McConnaughy-Vargas and Alex Vargas. He is survived by his spouse and life partner Priscilla Vargas, Brother Antonio Vargas, Sister Loida Gallego, Sons Jorge, Gil and Alex; daughter-in-law, Lisa McConnaughy-Vargas and grandchildren Danique Wyckoff, Michael Wyckoff, Kianna Vargas, Aubrey Vargas, Shaylene Vargas, Joshua Vargas, Nadia Vargas, Ilaiza Vargas and Ryan Vargas and great-granddaughter, Macenna Wyckoff and great-grandsons Renner Wyckoff and Jaden Vargas.
The family is at peace and is thankful that Gilberto is also at peace and with the Lord our father. We celebrate his life and will remember him with love and fondness forever.
