March 12, 1955 - November 2, 2023
Donald Wayne Long, affectionately known as Big Don or Papa Don, was born in the musical heart of Nashville, TN, and later became a cherished resident of Greenbrier, TN. His journey on earth commenced on March 12, 1955, and concluded on November 2, 2023.
Papa Don was a proud father to Don, Brian, Dalton, and Maggie Long. He was an adored grandfather to Preston, Derek, Cash, Tatum, Scarlett, Ava Mae, and Easton. He is survived by his loving sister Karen Long Baker, and is reunited in heaven with his sisters Sheila Moes and Brenda Campbell.
Big Don's professional journey was as gallant as it was dedicated. He served his country valiantly as an Army Ranger before protecting his community as a Sgt. with the Metro Nashville Police. Retirement didn't slow him down, but redirected his energy to the activities and hobbies of his cherished grandchildren.
The legendary "Papa Don University" was his whimsical creation, where he held the prestigious title of President. Here, Papa Don imparted wisdom, laughter, and positivity, always finding the silver lining in every cloud. His signature phrase, "Hey Babbbbayyyy", will echo in our hearts, reminding us of his playful spirit and boundless love.
Big Don was our family's resident prankster, his humor brightening even the gloomiest of days. His love for his family was immeasurable, often sacrificing his own comforts to ensure his children had everything they needed for a joyful and prosperous life.
Our hearts may be heavy with the loss, but the legacy of love, laughter, and life lessons Papa Don leaves behind will continue to light our way. His lessons from Papa Don University will guide us, his humor will continue to brighten our days, and his love will forever be the cornerstone of our family.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 12:00 PM Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Freeman officiating.
