Kim was born on Friday, June 26, 1992 in the San Bernardino, CA hospital to her mom Nhan and dad Hung.
Mom Nhan was so proud of Kim, at 3 month’s old, she took Kim to Vietnam to show to all her relatives….her brand new American baby of Vietnamese descent. They stayed for about 1 month.
Kim’s parents owned many Manicure Nail shops over the years in Victorville, CA and eventually in the Phoenix area.
When Nhan was working at a nail shop, Kim spent her earliest years in a bassinet right there with her mom.
In the late 1990’s they moved to Phoenix to start a nail shop, living in the Glendale area and eventually opened Elle’s Nails.
Kim’s mom changed her name to Elle to make it easier for her customers to call her by name.
Kim attended Deer Creek Elementary School and graduated from the 8th grade in 2006. She was always on the honor roll. Her mom took her to horseback riding lessons, the movies and many other activates. In 2003 Kim was active with the Arizona Twirling Athletes. Also Kim traveled several times with her mom going to Vietnam and Thailand. Kim went to many Sykes family reunions in Ohio.
Kim’s mom had a heart lung transplant on July 8, 2004 at University of Arizona Hospital in Tucson. This involved many trips for Kim going down to Tucson. She was in in 7th and 8th grade. Kim continued to study hard and get honor roll grades. Kim’s mom Elle, got better and lived a very productive life. Always home when Kim came home from school hugging her and giving Kim all the love and support a mother can give her daughter.
Kim did many things in High School at Mountain Ridge High School and participated in the AZ Elite Thunder Cheering Club. In 2010 they performed in Long Beach, CA and came in 2nd place nationally. Nam and Steve Sykes, (Aunt and Uncle) loved seeing Kim’s spectacular performance and were so proud of her. Also during this time Kim went on several Cruises with relatives including her cousins Tu Quynh and Mimi Tran, her big brother James and cousin Boris Sykes. She went to Universal Studios, Hollywood and 6 Flags of California with other relatives including Laura White.
Unfortunately Kim’s Mom’s good health lasted about 3 years after the surgery. And finally Elle succumbed to her illness July 7, 2008. But at least Kim got to have an extra 3 years and 364 days of her loving mom. Kim took her mom’s passing very hard. Kimberly got the honor of fulfilling her mom’s last wish of having her ashes released into the Sedona National Forest.
Kim’s Junior and Senior years in High School were made more challenging without her mom. Kim did write a senior paper, Sept 15, 2009, entitled “When Reality Hits” describing how she experienced her Mom’s death and the effect it had on her. The last sentence reads as her senior year was beginning “I wish that my mom could see me today as I prepare to graduate from high school, and hopefully be proud of the person that I’ve turned out to be”.
And like all high school seniors, Kim had many friends, had good times, continued to study hard and graduated May 27, 2010.
After high school Kim took some college courses, worked various jobs in Arizona and in 2014 she moved to Southern CA. where she lived with her brother James and his family. Kim graduated from Riverside Community College in May 2016. And took accounting classes at California State University of San Bernardino. In May 2018 Kim graduated with her BA degree in Business Administration. While studying she worked full time in accounting at WCS Distributing, Inc. in San Bernardino, CA.
During 2018 Kim was diagnosed with Gitelman Syndrome, it severally affects the kidney and flushes all the potassium out of the body. Kim had to take medicine, but there is no cure. You just have to try and live with it. Even with this Kim lived life to the fullest.
Once Kim had her accounting degree she began working for several accounting departments for companies in Southern CA and the Phoenix area. During this period she took several vacations. In November 2019 took an 8 day trip to Barcelona, Spain with her friend Christina Nguyen.
Kim quickly made friends with many people. In Phoenix she kept up many long term relationships, going out to eat, chatting….cooking. She posted her cooking on Facebook and Instagram.
Kim loved dogs and had many throughout her life. Kim had a Corgi named Ollie and a Australian Shepard named Rider. Only a few days before passed away, Kim adopted Rider from a Facebook notice. Kim’s dad is keeping Ollie and Rider has already found a new home.
Kim’s final accounting position in Phoenix was with JDM Partners, a Real Estate Development Firm. Kim was so happy to be with a great company, with co-workers who liked their jobs and enjoyed each other’s company. Kim’s boss, Daniel Orlando shared that Kim enhanced everyone’s life at JDM, professionally and personally and said what a loss Kim’s passing is for his finance team. Not only was Kim a “very hard working Angel”, she got along so well with everyone.
Kim wrote “I wish that my mom could see me today as I prepare to graduate from high school, and hopefully be proud of the person that I’ve turned out to be”. Kim exceeded all expectations and we know your Mom is very proud of you and know you are reunited with Me Nhan (Mommy) up in Heaven…
Kim is survived by her Dad, Hung Nguyen, her Big brother, James Nguyen, with his wife Kat and daughter Claire, many aunts and uncles including Nam and Steve Sykes, Cousins Tu Quynh va Mimi Tran and Boris Sykes, and many other Nguyen’s, Tran’s, Sykes’ and White’s. And many more relatives and friends. Kim will be remembered forever.
