The Colyer’s left Arkansas and planted roots in El Mirage, Arizona. Hazel graduated with top honors and was crowned Homecoming Queen at Agua Fria High School.
Hazel left home at the age of 21 and moved to California to stay with her older sister Bonnie. In 1963, Hazel married Raymond Schrefel and started a family, having two children in Burbank, California. She loved the photography world and worked in that industry until her retirement.
In 1994, she found new love in Harvey Branman and traveled the world with him. Hazel joined the Burbank Noon Kiwanis Club on October 4, 2011, and was named Co-Kiwanian of the Year for the 2012-2013 Fiscal Year. She served on the board in 2012 and was a director until 2020. Hazel was honored as one of the Great Women’s Achievers in Business Life in 2016, who demonstrated excellence and service as core values in their work and lives. Hazel was a powerhouse in everything she touched.
Hazel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Cindy & Vince Altuna; son and daughter-in-law, Ray & Kelly Schrefel, two beautiful grandchildren, Tyler & Alexa Schrefel; her biological daughter Heidi Anderson-Wassem, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and her three granddogs.
In addition to her parents, four sisters - Evelyn, Bonnie, Dorothy & Linda - and one brother, Frank - preceded her in death.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, June 15, 2024, beginning at 12:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home, 6450 W. Northern Avenue, Glendale, Arizona. Hazel will be laid to rest in Resthaven Park Cemetery.
